Prefinished Flooring vs. Unfinished Flooring

There are pros and cons to each type of flooring depending on the customer, the room and the needs.

Prefinished flooring can be installed easily and walked on the same day.. The mess is minimal, the finish is impeccable and there are so many species and options allowing you to get look and feel you want.

Unfinished flooring offers an assortment of countless species and various stain colors. Floors can be custom stained to match anything in your home - cabinets, furniture or other flooring. When completed, it is a beautiful finished look that can be sanded and stained again many times for years down the road.

Engineered vs. Solid Flooring

The subfloor will help determine whether you will need a solid or engineered floor. In addition, the level of the house for the installation will help make that decision.

Solid floors can be nailed or stapled down over wood subfloors, on or above grade. Solid flooring is typically ¾” thick so it can be sanded and refinished many times in years to come.

Engineered floors can usually be glued or floated over concrete below, on and above grade. Engineered floors have a wear layer over layers of plywood so once installed it looks exactly the same as a solid floor. The disadvantage is that these floors can only be sanded 2-3 times during its lifetime.
